answer discussion question below

response of at least 150 words

Cohen states that “The monster’s body is a cultural body” and that it is “an embodiment of a certain cultural moment” (Cohen, 1996; 4). Using two examples from the course materials (folktales, books, or movies), expand on Cohen’s thesis. Then, consider any monsters that we have not encountered in this class, but that are popular today. Do they embody this particular cultural moment? Why or why not?

aja review 2 4

Introduction

Historians love to review the works of other historians. Whenever a new history book is written, the historical profession selects experts in particular fields of studies to determine the value and contribution the new work will have on the academic discipline. Upon completion of the course’s reading, each student will be considered an expert and be required to read an academic article and submit a 2-page review (minimum). Students are encouraged to celebrate the author’s accomplishments, but also challenge anything that seems substandard. Style and creativity play a crucial role in the success of your review.

written assignment life in the tenements 1

When historians set out to learn about groups of people from the past, they look for records that our written by or about the individuals (journals, diaries, letters, newspaper articles, etc.) Since immigrants left behind very few records and very little was written about them during their lives, historians rely greatly on census records (a sample is provided below) to create a picture of what life was like for these individuals in the early 20th century. Because they are conducted once every 10 years by the federal government (and sometimes more frequently by state governments), the US Census of the Population provides information about people in a specific place at a specific time.

In this assignment, you will review census records for tenants living in a tenement New York City in 1870, 1900, 1915, and 1930. Carefully review the transcripts of the original censuses and answer the questions below.

Questions

1. Based on the information provided in the census records, how would you describe the people who lived at 97 Orchard Street?

2. What patterns did you observe in the 1870 census?

3. What patterns did you observe in the 1900 census?

4. What patterns did you observe in the 1915 census?

5. What patterns did you observe in the 1930 census?

6. What would you like to know above these individuals that you cannot learn from the census records?

7. Imagine historians will one day research your life. In addition to census records, what types of “close” sources might they use to learn about your life?

a fractious 1860 presidential election disunion and then war exposed the fault lines of american political and social discourse in hindsight it is apparent that there were many events factors that served to either pull the country

Overview

In this exercise you will use your reflective question sets and all the skills you have learned in the previous exercises to write a full length, rule of three, historical essay on the prompt below.

As a reminder, an analytical essay contains an introduction setting up the context (with a clear rule of three thesis statement as the last sentence), three paragraphs of the body (in the same format as the one paragraph assignment) – one for each key point in the thesis statement, and a conclusion.

Prompt

PROMPT:

A fractious 1860 presidential election, disunion, and then war exposed the fault lines of American political and social discourse. In hindsight, it is apparent that there were many events/factors that served to either pull the country together or push it apart from its earliest colonial experiences through the events of the 1850s. In this essay, analyze these push-pull factors of unity v division.

Hint 1: Think broadly about concepts of unity and division first, you may wish to organize along the lines of economic, social, and political factors (this may be easiest, although there are many other ways to organize your thesis statement). Once you have your overall “big picture” ideas in place, think about the specific and detailed historical evidence (facts) that will back up your arguments. What primary documents have you read that address these issues? Don’t forget the key individuals and events to use as evidence. Successful essays will consider a broad range of evidence in support of arguments.

Hint 2: You may wish to concept map or outline key factors first and then pull out your three strongest arguments to develop more fully in the essay.

Requirements for the Final Essay

  • Must be in Rule of Three format with a introduction and strong thesis statement, 3 paragraphs of the body (each with their own thesis statement – one for each of the three key points of your overall thesis), and conclusion. So a minimum of 5 paragraphs.
  • This is a fact based essay, you must provide specific and detailed evidence for your hypotheses.
  • You must utilize a minimum of three primary sources from the assigned materials (primary sources posted in the Blackboard course module OR found under the primary source section of each chapter in American Yawp only; you may not utilize sources linked to in the reference section of American Yawp) as evidence in your essay
  • You must utilize a minimum of three secondary sources from the assigned materials as evidence in your essay
  • You may only use materials assigned in this course for your essay (we have vetted all the materials utilized in this course, other materials may not be appropriate or accurate). If you use outside sources your grade will be docked.
  • DO NOT QUOTE sources, paraphrase in your own words and cite
  • You must consider ethics/ethical decision making in this essay
  • Don’t forget about historical geography, where something takes place matters and it may be important to your argument.
  • You must use Turabian citation style in this essay; all citations must be footnote style citations (no parenthetical cites allowed, no endnotes/works cited at the end, you need footnotes). Be sure to review how to properly cite a primary source that may be contained in another work and be sure to use page numbers where possible.
  • 12 pt type, 1 inch margins, double-spaced

NOTE ON CITATIONS

CITATIONS are REQUIRED for this essay. You will lose points for failure to cite or incorrect style of citations.
