write a brief essay on the poem

ESSAY

Due: February 5, 2020

Your essay should be 3-4 pages (1000 words, maximum) typed and with normal spacing and margins. Be sure to number your pages and to give your essay a title. Your essay is due before midnight, February 5.

Choose one of the following poems:

Gertrude Stein, “New.”

H.D., “Oread.”

Wallace Stevens, “Peter Quince at the Clavier.” (It is acceptable to choose one or two of the sections of this poem.)

Robert Frost, “The Oven Bird.”

Write a brief essay on the poem, with three objectives in mind: 1) Describe the poem, paying particular attention to its language, to its form, and to its look. Don’t write down the idea of your understanding. 2) Describe the style of the poem, considering whether it is formal or experimental; vague, specific, or psychological; literary or plain. (You can include other descriptive terms you find appropriate.) 3) Describe what it’s like to read the poem, trying to avoid mentioning what you think it might mean. Is the poem memorable? Does the language attract your attention? Do you register its formal effects? Does the poem improve upon rereading it?
