ASSIGNMENT:

Read the chapter on Semantics, available as a pdf in modules, to learn about the various forms of semantic argument (i.e. purr words, snarl words, persuasion, use of names, indirect statement, and denotation/connotation).

The assignment will be to watch a new episode. After watching the episode copy the transcript into a document and highlight the sections that speak to semantics. In the analysis of the transcript students should write a 300 word analytical essay explaining how the use of semantic argument either adds to or detracts from the authority or non-authority of the episode content. Be sure to address how word choice adds or detracts–semantics is all about word choice. Anything medium of communication from writing, to film, to interviews, relies on the most effective and powerful use of language.
