Part 1: Genetic Disorders

In addition to the readings from Week 3 (Chapters 8, 9 & 10), select a specific Genetic Disorder (i.e. Duane Syndrome, Downs Syndrome, Cri du chat, Achondroplasia, Fragile X Syndrome, Hemophilia, Progeria and Tay-Sachs to name a few) and research it further. There are over 40 different Genetic Disorders, please select a specific Genetic Disorder which has not been blogged about by another student. This will diversify our Week 4 Blog with information on different Genetic Disorders.

Go to the National Human Genome Research Institute or The Office of Rare Diseases Research (ORDR) and research a specific Genetic Disorder.

Title your initial blog post with the specific Genetic Disorder you will be discussing; this is required so everyone knows which specific Genetic Disorders have been posted on. Then share with the class what you have learned about the Genetic Disorder by writing a full paragraph summary (150 words minimum) of what you have learned about the Genetic Disorder including: who is affected, what is the genetic abnormality, what treatments are available and what is the current state of research. Also, include a link to the specific URL (type the title, highlight it, then, click on the link icon to add the URL) where information on the Genetic Disorder was obtained so your peers can research it further (the specific URL is required to be listed in the initial blog post). Do not copy and paste directly from the website. This blog should be written in your own words. The blog postmust be directly posted in the classroom; please do not upload a Word document only.

The Week 3 Assignment – Genetic Disorders Blog is worth a potential total maximum of 100 points and there are two components:

  1. Part 1: your initial blog post, 150 words minimum, discussing a credible and reliable, scientific website (10 points maximum) that augments what you have already learned about that particular genetic disorder. The initial blog post will be scored on topic (10 points), grammar and spelling (10 points), content and discussion of the specific genetic disorder (45 points maximum) and meeting the minimum blog post length of 150 words (5 points)
