1) DISCUSSION QUESTION

Part 1: Post a Response

In this week’s discussion you will be exploring energy and how it’s captured, released, and used by all living creatures.

Review the video about the “phytoplankton that brought Earth to life” found at: . In this clip, Penny Chisholm discusses a tiny phytoplankton called Prochlorococcus. Based on that video, address the following:

  • In the video, Dr. Chisholm tells us that Prochlorococcus samples from different environments that are genetically different. Discuss what this tells us about the relationship between organisms and their environments.
  • What do you think is the most interesting or significant aspect of Prochlorococcus?

2) PEER REVIEW #1 (JESSICA)

Hello Dr. Cox and Class,

According to Dr. Chisholm, the Prochlorococcus is a basic unit of life as its ancestors played a significant role in facilitating the evolution process. These ancestors were significant through their biochemistry that led to the splitting of the water element releasing oxygen into our atmosphere. Dr. Chisholm is an Oceanographer who is focused on the study of microorganism and the role they play. She has identified the relationship between these organisms and their environments. As these microorganisms differ with regards to the region they occupy on the ocean. These microscopic plants are defined by the region of the ocean they are isolated from as their characteristics are defined by these regions. This aspect recognizes the interaction between these microorganisms and their environment that try to optimize their symbiotic relationship. These microscopic plants genetic makeup are relative to the region of the ocean they occupy. Therefore, these plants are affected by the properties of the environment they occur.

What do you think is the most interesting or significant aspect of Prochlorococcus?

Despite the Prochlorococcus being discovered just 25 years ago, its importance has been underrated. The Prochlorococcus is significant in the production of oxygen production by the ocean. Their biochemistry led to the process of photosynthesis that split oxygen from the water molecule sustaining evolution through the creation of oxygen. These cells put oxygen in earth’s atmosphere creating the most profound process on our planet.

3) PEER REVIEW #2 (VERNON)

Hello Dr. Cox and classmates,

In the video, Dr. Chisholm brought out that on earth the smallest organism is the Prochlorococcus Dr. Penney Chisholm is an Oceanographer, in the ocean, she studies microorganisms, the ocean consists of over 3 billion small tiny cells, these microscopic plants even though small in size she mentioned that their personalities are different. Something else important in the ocean is the production of oxygen, when the split of the water or H2O took place it produced the atmosphere with the oxygen so we could evolve, which is vital for our life.

The Dr also said that the water in oceans are pictured nice and blue which makes you wonder about where the plants that are green in color where they are? But they are so small and tiny this is why they are referred to as phytoplankton, this is actually the web for food to the animals. She showed the relationship between the organisms and the environment she also mentioned that because of the Prochlorococcus, the earth had an estimated amount of 10% photosynthesis

The most important aspect is even though the discovery was about 20 years ago it is “earth’s most abundant organism” and its major part is the ocean and it producing the oxygen that is vital for our life to breathe.
